LEATHER CARE - CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER FURNITURE

Leather is more durable than fabric so it obviously lasts longer. Improper maintenance can however lead to expensive restoration or replacement. Leather can be cleaned and cared for and, when done correctly, will maintain a high level of appearance throughout its life.

Tips to help care for your Leather Furniture

  • Dust leather on a weekly basis or just wipe with a damp cloth
  • Do not overwet
  • Test any leather spray on a hidden area before use
  • Place leather furniture away from radiators as heat can damage
  • Do not use soap on leather
  • Place leather furniture out of direct sunlight as leather is prone to fade
  • Do not clean with furniture polish
  • Do not use general cleaning solvent or abrasive cleaning products

Pigmented or 'Protected' Leathers

Pigmented or ‘Protected’ leathers have a durable finish and many people are tempted to use general household products to clean their leather furniture. Unfortunately many of these cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that break down this durable finish causing the pigment to crack or peel. This is why it is so important to use the correct cleaning products on your leather furniture. Correct maintenance, will maintain your furniture's appearance and prolong its life. The key to maintaining beautiful leather is proper care and conditioning.

Aniline or Nubuck Leathers

Aniline or Nubuck leathers are sold due to their appearance, feel and comfort. This type of leather does not have the durable finish that pigmented or protected leather has. These leathers are usually expensive and correct maintenance is crucial to protect your investment. Aniline and Nubuck leather is difficult to clean but there are ways improve its appearance if its looking rather dull and lifeless. If you are unsure of the type of leather, consider seeking professional assistance as improper cleaning may lead to permanent damage.
