The most common type of leather is 'pigmented' also known as 'protected' leather which has a durable lacquer finish. This type of leather is fairly simple to maintain and can be wiped with a damp cloth to remove any dust and keep clean.
Another popular type of leather today is Aniline. Furniture made from this type of leather is sold due to its appearance, feel and comfort. Aniline leather does not have the durable finish that pigmented or protected leather has. It could be described as porous as it does not have the lacquer finish and therefore has a high absorbency rate. These leathers are usually more expensive and correct maintenance is crucial to protect your investment. Aniline leather is difficult to clean but there are ways to improve its appearance if it begins to looking rather dull and lifeless.
Its common for areas of Aniline leather to gradually darken with oils from human hair and skin. This is a build up of grease and oils over time normally appearing around the head rest area and around the arms of your suite, couch or chair. Trying to remove this greasy substance using basic methods such as a damp cloth will achieve nothing. To remove, a specialist powder must be applied to the surface which will draw out the grease. The danger with carrying out this process on Aniline leather is the fact that color can be removed at the same time. However it is necessary to draw out the grease first and, if necessary, restore the color in a further process. This operation should not be taken lightly and requires some experience in dealing with this type of problem. Consider seeking professional assistance as improper cleaning may lead to permanent damage.
